Organic glass for hard contact lenses
Organic glass is a sheet material obtained by block polymerization of (meth) acrylic monomers under the action of initiators of radical polymerization. Depending on the purpose, the polymerization mixture contains plasticizers, dyes, opacifiers, stabilizers.
They produce plasticized and unplasticized glass colorless transparent, colored transparent, colored opaque, cloudy.
The use of polymethyl methacrylate organic glass is extremely diverse:
in aircraft, automobile and shipbuilding — as a structural material;
in industrial and civil construction — for glazing of domes, windows, verandas and decorative interior decoration;
in agriculture — for glazing of greenhouses, greenhouses, etc .;
in the lighting industry — for the manufacture of protective caps of lamps;
in medicine — for the manufacture of intraocular lenses (eye lenses), rigid contact lenses, parts of instruments and instruments, as well as prostheses;
in optics — in the production of lenses and prisms;
in the fine arts — to create engravings, sculptures, etc.
Polymethyl methacrylate organic glass is characterized by high transparency, weather resistance, resistance to water, alcohols, dilute alkali and acids, biological media.
Basic Rules of Treatment
Polymethyl methacrylate organic glass is characterized by high transparency, weather resistance, resistance to water, alcohols, dilute acids and alkalis, biological media. Glass should not be wiped with organic solvents.
Organic glass in circulation under normal conditions is safe.
The ignition temperature of the organic glass is 260 ° C, the autoignition temperature is 460 ° C. When burning, extinguish finely sprayed water, foam, sand.
Transport by any mode of transport in conditions that exclude moisture and dust.
The glass is stored in the manufacturer’s packaging in closed rooms with relative air humidity up to 65% at a temperature of 5 to 35 ° C. It is recommended to remove the protective film from the glass only after the final installation in place. When painting with organic glass, the surface of the glass should be covered with several layers of protective paper.
Ways of recycling glass
Sheet organic glass is processed by vacuum and pneumoforming and stamping. It can be subjected to all kinds of machining.
Mechanical restoration. Organic glass is processed by milling, drilling, grinding and other methods. Pure cutting is recommended to be carried out on high speed machines with high cutting speed and small feed. At the same time, good heat and chip removal is necessary. Milling is performed on high-speed cutting modes. Cooling and chip removal is carried out by compressed air. Drilling holes in sheet organic glass is done with a spiral drill with an angle of sharpening at the apex of 90-110 degrees. at low cutting and tool feeding speeds. Grinding of the faces of organic glass is done on thin grinding wheels by a dry method. The pressure created at the same time should not cause overheating of the material.
Hot forming. This is the most common way of obtaining products from sheet glass. Depending on the configuration of the resulting product, vacuum or pneumoforming is used (with pneumoforming, the operating cycle is shorter, in addition, air pressure can be varied over a wide range, ensuring the design of products of complex configuration).
Heating of flat glass is carried out in thermo cabinets or in installations with infra-radiators. The molding temperature depends on the grade of the glass, its thickness, the molding method and the shape of the part. The lower limit of the molding temperature for organic glasses is equal to the softening temperature plus 10 deg. C, the temperature difference should not exceed +/- 3 degrees. The heating time is not less than 4 minutes per 1 mm of the glass thickness. The upper limit of the molding temperature (150-180) degree С.
