Sodium Pyrosulfite

Sodium pyrosulfite (Na2S2O5), or sodium metabisulphite, or sodium pyrosulfonic acid is a salt of pyrosporous acid, a white or yellowish crystalline powder with a pungent odor. Sometimes referred to as sodium bisulfite, sodium pyrosulfite, sodium metabisulphite.

Application

Food industry: it is used as a preservative, antioxidant, bleach and baking powder, used in the production of fruit juices, sweets, wine and beer. A safe daily intake of up to 0.7 mg per kilogram of body weight. In the liver it is oxidized to safe sulfates and excreted in the urine. It is able to cause a reaction in allergic people.
Pharmaceutical industry: it is used as a filler in some tablets, auxiliaries in injectable medicinal preparations, water filtration systems, for disinfection of equipment.
Chemical industry.
Agriculture: used to remove stumps.
