Sodium Sulphide

Sodium sulfide is an oxygen-free salt. In the usual state — white powder, very hygroscopic. Melts without decomposition, thermally stable. Technical sodium sulphide yellowish or brownish (reddish) contains up to 60% of sodium sulphide. It is highly soluble in water, hydrolyzed by anion, creates a strongly alkaline medium in solution. When standing in air, the solution becomes cloudy (colloidal sulfur) and turns yellow (the color of polysulfide). A typical reductant. Attaches sulfur. Enters the ion exchange reaction.

Sodium sulfide is used in the production of sulfur dyestuffs and cellulose, to remove the hair covering of hides when tanning leather, as a reagent in analytical chemistry.
