Copolymerization as a synthesis method has unlimited possibilities for modifying the properties of polymers.
Copolymerization of (meth) acrylic monomers makes it possible to obtain polymers combining the traditional properties of (meth) acrylates (transparency, colorlessness and weather resistance, nontoxicity and elasticity) with purely specific ones (high adhesion to different substrates, regulated ratio to water, high thickening ability of aqueous and organic media and etc.). Due to this (meth) acrylic copolymers use practically all branches of the national economy: oil and metallurgy, paper and light industry, engineering and instrument making, medicine, electronics, agriculture, etc. The scope of their application is expanding every year due to the discovery of new useful properties.
Along with the known organosoluble (co) polymers, water soluble and water-swelling (co) polymers are in greatest demand (and this trend will continue in the near future). Increased interest in them is primarily due to reduced fire hazard, non-toxicity, low impact on the environment and human health. Of undoubted interest are (meth) acrylic copolymers — modifiers of polymer compositions (mainly based on PVC and polymethyl methacrylates — PMMA) and composites based on (meth) acrylic copolymers. The latter are advantageously distinguished due to their use together with cheap fillers or waste products (gypsum, paper, fibers, etc.) for the production of building materials, products of complex configuration, sealing compounds, etc.
Organically soluble (meth) acrylic (co) polymers are prepared by solution and suspension polymerization processes.
A significant group consists of (co) polymers synthesized in organic solvents. In this case, the (co) polymer is not separated from the solvent, but is used as a solution.
Solvents are esters, aromatic hydrocarbons, alcohols, ketones. As initiators of radical (co) polymerization, peroxides and azo compounds, soluble in the polymerization medium, are used. As a result of the reaction, a solution with a copolymer content of up to 50% is obtained.
Solutions of (meth) acrylic (co) polymers in an organic solvent are indispensable in the preparation of very thin continuous glue coatings, which is practically impossible for (meth) acrylic latexes. Of great importance is the fact that drying from a light-boiling organic solvent proceeds much faster and with less energy consumption than, for example, from water.
Organically soluble (meth) acrylic (co) polymers are used to produce coatings on leather, wood, metals, plastics. They are also used as adhesives, binders, for making adhesive tapes, for applications, for finishing fabrics, etc.
Suspension (co) polymers favorably differ from solution solutions with lower transportation costs and greater safety. They have a good marketable appearance (a transparent colorless or white beads measuring 100-300 μm). This allows the consumer to prepare a solution (co) of the polymer in the desired solvent of any concentration and viscosity, which is not always possible for solution (co) polymers.
